Hi, I'm Joel Butterly.  I was born in Boston but grew up in Vermont. I'm the youngest of three siblings.  I attended Dartmouth College, where I double majored in Government and Geography (which is a thing), and minored in Ethical Philosophy. I was a member of the Beta Alpha Omega fraternity (previously, Beta Theta Pi). I was also captain of the boxing team, and the president of the powerlifting club. I was pretty chubby growing up, which led me to become very interested in fitness. During my senior year, I became a certified personal trainer. In 2011 I graduated Summa Cum Laude, and was an early inductee into Phi Beta Kappa.   After college, I took a year off to travel and apply to law school. I continued to compete in boxing and powerlifting. I even managed to set a couple of weightlifting records, which have almost certainly been beaten by now. I was terrible at bench pressing, which didn't help. During this year, I spent several months writing a weight-loss book entitled "Dinner Has Been Cancelled." It was supposed to be funny and useful, but instead ended up being, as my dad delicately put it, "highly abusive and not nearly as funny as you think." If I ever publish it, I think I'll put his quote on the front cover.  The following year I attended Yale Law School. I quickly realized that my lifelong goal of becoming a big-time lawyer was fueled almost entirely by sensationalist news stories and the film My Cousin Vinny. I actually came to the realization that I wanted to start my own company while playing a game of Texas Hold'em with six other Yale Law students. They had no tolerance for risk, and as a result, none of them were winning (or losing). We had a $20 buy-in and after four hours, none of their stacks had moved more than a couple bucks. Incidentally, I managed to go broke twice during the night. At least I tried.  The takeaway point for me was that I didn't want to approach my career with this same level of risk aversion.
